A tree can die from being planted just two or three inches too deep, and it can take fifteen years to show it. There is no dramatic event, no storm, no obvious injury. The tree just gets weaker every year until one day it falls over in a moderate wind with roots that never spread out the way they should have.
That is the story behind most girdling roots symptoms we find in the Treasure Valley: a normal-looking tree with a completely abnormal root system, usually caused at planting time and invisible for a decade or more. It is one of the most common problems we diagnose on mature trees, and one of the most preventable if you catch it early.

What a Girdling Root Actually Is
A girdling root, sometimes called a stem girdling root, is a root that grows across or around the base of the trunk or another major root instead of growing outward and away from the tree. As both the root and the trunk thicken with each year of growth, the root presses into the trunk tissue like a rope tightening around a growing limb. Eventually it compresses and kills the vascular tissue (the layer just under the bark that moves water, sugar, and nutrients) on that side of the trunk.
The tree does not usually die outright from this. Instead it slowly loses function on the girdled side, develops weaker structure at the base, and becomes more prone to uprooting or trunk failure, often without any dramatic warning before it happens. This is a different problem than surface roots that heave sidewalks or press against a foundation, which we cover separately in our guide to tree roots and foundation damage; girdling happens at the trunk itself, not out where roots meet a structure.
The Root Cause: Planted Too Deep, Almost Every Time
The single biggest driver of girdling roots is a tree planted too deep, and this happens constantly, both in nurseries and in home landscapes. When a tree sits in its container or burlap ball too long, roots that would normally spread outward start circling the inside edge of the pot instead. If that tree gets planted at the depth it came in the container, rather than at the depth where the root flare actually is, those circling roots stay buried and continue circling underground, eventually crossing over the base of the trunk or other structural roots.
Piling mulch or soil against the trunk after planting (the “volcano mulching” mistake we cover in our guide to mulching around trees) makes the problem worse by encouraging new roots to form higher on the trunk than they should, in a zone where circling and girdling become more likely.

Symptoms: How to Spot Girdling Roots Yourself
You do not need to dig to notice most of these signs.
No visible root flare. A healthy tree trunk widens gradually as it meets the ground, like the base of a wine glass. If your tree’s trunk goes into the soil looking like a telephone pole, with no flare or widening at all, that is the single most reliable sign of a buried root flare and likely girdling roots underneath.
A flat side on the trunk. Instead of a round trunk, you see a flattened or dished-in section, usually a few inches to a foot above the soil line. This is the trunk’s growth being physically restricted by a root pressing against it from one side.
Dieback concentrated on one side of the canopy. Because girdling restricts the flow of water and nutrients on the affected side of the trunk, the branches that draw from that side often decline first, giving the canopy a lopsided, thinning appearance.
A lean that develops gradually over years, without any storm or event to explain it, as the tree’s root anchoring weakens on the girdled side.
Premature fall color or general decline that does not match an obvious cause like drought or disease, similar to what we describe in our guide to drought stress, but persistent even in years with adequate water.
The Root Collar Excavation: How Arborists Confirm It
The only way to know for certain whether a tree has girdling roots, and how severe the problem is, is to expose the root flare and look. This process, called root collar excavation, involves carefully removing soil and mulch from around the base of the trunk, usually with an air spade (a tool that uses compressed air to blow soil away without damaging roots or bark) rather than a shovel, which can nick roots and bark. It is the same air spading technique used to correct soil compaction around tree roots, just applied right at the trunk instead of across the wider root zone.
Once the flare is exposed, an arborist can see exactly which roots, if any, are crossing or pressing against the trunk or other major roots, and assess how much vascular tissue has already been compromised.
Can Girdling Roots Be Fixed?
Sometimes, and the answer depends heavily on how long the problem has gone unaddressed.
Early intervention (young tree, minor girdling): the offending root can often be cut and removed entirely during a root collar excavation, especially if it is a single root that has not yet caused significant trunk compression. Trees under five to ten years old, with girdling caught before major dieback, often respond well and go on to develop normally.
Moderate cases: if the root has been pressing on the trunk for years and has caused some vascular damage, removing the root still helps by stopping further compression, but the tree may carry a permanent scar or weak point at that location. Growth often improves but the tree’s overall structure at the base stays compromised.
Severe or long-standing cases: if a girdling root has been constricting the trunk for a decade or more, has caused a flat side extending deep into the wood, or has already killed a significant portion of the vascular tissue, removing the root at that point can sometimes do more harm than good by removing critical remaining anchorage. In these cases, the honest recommendation is often to manage the tree’s risk (reducing weight in the affected side of the canopy, monitoring for lean or new symptoms) rather than attempt a fix, or to plan for eventual removal if the tree becomes a safety hazard.

A Harris Ranch Scenario: Caught in Time
We got a call from a homeowner in Harris Ranch about a 12-year-old maple with a noticeable flat spot on the trunk and a canopy that looked thin on one side compared to the rest. Root collar excavation revealed a single root, about two inches in diameter, that had been planted circling the container and never corrected. We removed the root and cleaned up the flare. The tree cost about $325 for the excavation and corrective work, and within two growing seasons the canopy filled back in and the dieback stopped progressing.
A very different outcome came from a property in Nampa with a mature 40-year-old shade tree that had developed a severe lean over the previous three years. When Girdling Roots Become a Safety Issue
A tree with advanced girdling roots and a developing lean is not a DIY diagnosis or DIY fix. Do not attempt to dig around a large tree’s base and cut roots yourself, especially on a mature tree, since cutting the wrong root or too many roots at once can destabilize a tree that was otherwise still standing on borrowed time. Preventing Girdling Roots in New Plantings
Since this problem starts at planting time in the vast majority of cases, prevention is straightforward, if often skipped:
- Before planting, physically locate the root flare on the nursery stock, even if that means removing some soil from the top of the root ball, and plant so the flare sits at or slightly above grade
- Cut and straighten any visibly circling roots at planting time rather than leaving them to grow into the trunk over the following years
- Never pile mulch against the trunk in a “volcano” shape; keep mulch a few inches back from the bark and only 3 to 4 inches deep
- Check young trees (especially ones planted by a previous homeowner or a landscaper you did not personally supervise) for flare visibility within the first few years, while correction is still easy
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if my tree has girdling roots without digging? Look for a trunk with no visible flare at the base (it goes straight into the ground like a pole), a flattened section on one side of the trunk, or canopy dieback concentrated on one side. Does mulch cause girdling roots? Mulch itself does not cause girdling, but mulch piled against the trunk in a volcano shape encourages roots to grow up into the mulch near the trunk, where they are more likely to circle and eventually girdle. Proper mulching, a ring a few inches away from the bark, does not carry this risk.
How much does it cost to fix girdling roots? A straightforward root collar excavation and single root removal on a smaller tree typically runs a few hundred dollars.
