How much does it cost to remove a tree?

Tree removal is priced by size, not by the hour, because size drives the rigging, the crew and the cleanup. The ranges below are the ones this calculator uses. A straightforward backyard job lands at the low end; anything near a house, a fence or a power line moves toward the top.

Tree removal cost by size
TierHeightTypical cost
Smallunder 30 ft$300 – $800
Medium30 – 60 ft$800 – $2,500
Large60 ft+$2,500 – $5,000+
Extreme (crane or hazard)80 ft+ or complex$5,000 – $8,000+

Average cost to cut down a 30 foot tree

A 30-foot tree sits at the bottom of the medium tier, so expect $800 – $2,500. At that height a climber can usually take the tree down in sections without a crane, which is what keeps it below the large-tree bracket.

Large tree removal cost

Anything over 60 ft runs $2,500 – $5,000+. Past roughly 80 ft, or when the tree is leaning over a structure, the job needs a crane and moves into the $5,000 – $8,000+ band.

Tree trimming cost

Trimming and pruning cost far less than removal because the tree stays standing and there is no stump or haul-away.

Tree trimming and pruning cost by size
TierHeightTypical cost
Small ornamentalunder 25 ft$150 – $400
Medium25 – 50 ft$350 – $900
Large50 ft+$800 – $2,000+
Specialty (crane, near power lines)any$1,500+

Stump grinding cost

Stumps are priced by diameter, not tree height, and run $75 – $400 per stump for most jobs: $75 – $150 under 12 in, $150 – $300 from 12 – 24 in, and $250 – $600+ above 24 in. Multiple stumps ground on one visit are discounted, since the machine is already on site.

Emergency and storm work

Emergency pricing follows what the tree hit rather than how tall it was. Getting a limb off a structure runs $150 – $850; a whole tree down on a structure runs $1,500 – $4,000+. Idaho homeowner policies commonly cover $500 – $1,000 per tree for removal, up to $5,000 per storm event, so check your policy before paying out of pocket.

What moves the price

Every figure on this page is a typical range, not a quote. Species, lean, decay and site conditions all move the final number, which is why the estimate above is a range rather than a single price.
