Aphids: Common, Ugly, Rarely Dangerous
Aphids are the pest we get the most panicked calls about and the one that usually needs the least intervention. A tree covered in aphids looks alarming, sticky leaves, ants running up and down the trunk to farm the honeydew, sometimes a black sooty mold growing on the residue below. But established, healthy trees generally tolerate aphid populations without lasting harm.
When it’s worth treating: young trees under heavy aphid pressure, or when honeydew is dripping onto a patio, deck, or parked cars enough to be a real nuisance. Insecticidal soap or a strong hose spray targeting the colonies works for light to moderate infestations. Ladybugs and lacewings, which show up naturally once aphid populations build, often bring numbers down on their own within a few weeks.
When spraying is pointless: on a large, mature, otherwise healthy shade tree. You are not going to meaningfully reduce aphid numbers across a 40-foot canopy with a backyard sprayer, and the tree was not in danger to begin with. Save the money.
Scale Insects: The Ones People Miss for Years

Borers are the pest group where we take a call seriously right away, because the damage happens invisibly under the bark and by the time it is obvious, a significant amount of vascular tissue is already compromised.
Common borers in the Treasure Valley include flatheaded borers (which favor stressed or sun-scalded trees), roundheaded borers, and clearwing moth borers that target fruit trees and ornamentals like birch and ash. A vigorous, well-watered, unstressed tree is much less attractive to egg-laying adult beetles and moths in the first place.

What actually helps: for confirmed borer activity, systemic insecticide treatments applied by a professional, timed to adult emergence, can protect a valuable tree. But treatment only makes sense if the tree still has enough healthy tissue left to save. A tree with borer damage circling more than half the trunk circumference or extensive dieback through the main scaffold branches has usually passed the point where treatment pays off.
Spider Mites: The Heat-Loving Nuisance
Spider mites thrive in exactly the conditions Boise summers deliver: hot, dry, dusty. They are technically arachnids, not insects, which is part of why standard insecticides do not touch them and sometimes make things worse by killing off the predatory insects that would otherwise keep mite populations in check.
Damage shows up as a stippled, faded, dusty bronze look to foliage, usually starting on the lower, interior parts of the canopy where dust settles and airflow is poor. Fine webbing on the undersides of leaves or between branches confirms it under a hand lens.
Treatment: a strong, direct spray of water on the undersides of leaves, repeated every few days, physically knocks mite populations down and is often as effective as a miticide for moderate infestations. Keeping trees adequately watered during heat matters too, since drought-stressed trees are more susceptible to mite damage and slower to recover from it. When Spraying Anything Is a Waste of Money
This is worth saying plainly because it saves people from buying products they do not need. Spraying is pointless when:
- The tree is large and mature and the pest pressure is light to moderate, since the tree’s own reserves can absorb the damage
- The pest has already moved past the treatable life stage (mature scale, adult borers that have already emerged)
- The real problem is a stressed tree, in which case treating the pest without addressing the underlying stress (usually water, sometimes soil compaction or a recent construction wound) just means the pest problem comes back next year
- General-purpose “tree and shrub” sprays are applied without actually identifying which pest is present, since the wrong product at the wrong time does essentially nothing except cost money and kill beneficial insects
