The Pruning-Out Protocol: How We Actually Stop It
Once fire blight is confirmed, pruning is the primary treatment. There is no spray that cures an active infection. The goal is to physically remove the bacteria before they travel into wood you cannot afford to lose.
The protocol we follow:
- Cut at least 12 inches below the last visible symptom, into clean wood. Fire blight travels inside the branch faster than the visible blackening suggests, so cutting right at the edge of the damage almost always leaves bacteria behind.
- Sterilize the pruning tool between every single cut. A 10 percent bleach solution or isopropyl alcohol works. Skipping this step is the number one reason DIY pruning spreads the disease instead of stopping it. One infected cut, one clean cut with the same unsterilized blade, and you have just inoculated healthy wood.
- Remove cut material from the property. Do not compost it, do not leave it in a brush pile near the tree. Bag it or burn it where local rules allow.
- Prune during dry weather. Cutting into an infected tree during a wet spell can push bacteria into fresh wounds. Dry, cool days (or dormant season, when possible) are safer.
This works well for shoots you can reach from the ground or a step stool. It stops being a DIY job once infected wood is up in the main scaffold branches, near power lines, or high enough to need a ladder or chainsaw. The safest time for major fire blight pruning is during winter dormancy, when the bacteria are not actively spreading and the tree is not pushing new growth for them to infect. Our general approach: if you spot shepherd’s crooks in May or June, prune those specific shoots immediately using the 12-inch rule, focusing only on what is clearly infected. Save the bigger structural cleanup, thinning out cankered scaffold branches, for the following dormant season once the active spread has stopped. Cutting into a heavily infected tree during peak summer heat and growth can do more harm than good if it is not done carefully.
What About Sprays?
Streptomycin and copper-based bactericides exist and can reduce new infections when applied during bloom, before symptoms appear. They are preventive, not curative. Once you see a shepherd’s crook, spraying that branch does nothing for it. These products also need precise timing tied to bloom stage and weather, which is part of why we generally recommend them only as a supplement to good pruning and sanitation, not a replacement for it. Sometimes fire blight wins. Signs a tree is past the point of saving:
- Cankers have reached the main trunk or major scaffold limbs, not just outer branches

- The tree has been reinfected two or three years running despite aggressive pruning
- Rootstock blight has set in, visible as oozing cankers near the graft union or soil line, which usually means the tree is done regardless of what you do above ground
A young ornamental pear in a Nampa front yard we looked at last spring had blight in the crown two years running. The homeowner had been cutting out individual branches each June, but the infection kept reaching the main leader by the following year.
