Lichen isn’t a plant. It’s a composite organism, a partnership between a fungus and either algae or cyanobacteria, living together in a way that benefits both. The fungus provides structure and protection; the algae photosynthesizes and shares sugars back. Neither species could survive alone the way they do combined.

Lichen doesn’t have roots. It doesn’t penetrate bark, draw sap, or feed on the tree in any way. This is the advice we give most often on this topic: leave it alone. Scraping, pressure washing, or wire-brushing lichen and moss off a trunk doesn’t help the tree and can genuinely hurt it. Bark is living tissue on the outside, and aggressive scraping can strip away the outer protective layer, creating wounds that invite decay organisms and insects that actually do harm trees.
