Every conifer sheds its oldest needles eventually. Pines are not evergreen in the sense of keeping every needle forever, they are evergreen in the sense of always having some green needles, while cycling out the oldest ones on a regular schedule.

What normal needle drop looks like: interior needles, the ones closest to the trunk and furthest from the branch tips, turn yellow, then brown, then drop, typically in fall. Bark Beetles: The Pest That Actually Kills Pines Here

Ips beetles (commonly called ips engraver beetles) and other bark beetle species are the most serious pest threat to pines in the Treasure Valley, and unlike the seasonal needle drop question, this one is genuinely urgent when it is happening.

How it works: adult beetles bore through the bark and tunnel through the phloem layer just underneath, laying eggs in galleries that girdle the tree’s ability to move water and nutrients. Because the damage happens under the bark, by the time the whole crown turns reddish-brown (the classic sign of a beetle-killed pine), the tree has usually been dead or dying for weeks already. The beetles have typically already moved on to attack the next tree by the time obvious symptoms show up.
