Here is the question we get asked at nearly every new planting: should you stake a new tree? For most trees, in most situations, the honest answer is no. Staking is one of the most over-applied practices in home landscaping, and when it is left on too long, which is nearly always, it does more harm than the wind ever would have.

Why Trees Usually Don’t Need Staking
A tree left to move naturally in the wind develops something staked trees do not: reaction wood and trunk taper. A trunk that is rigidly staked and cannot sway skips this process almost entirely, and ends up with a thinner, weaker base than an unstaked tree of the same age.

Staking is not always wrong. There are specific situations where it genuinely helps a tree establish:
Bare-root trees. A bare-root tree, which has little to no soil holding its root system in place at planting, often needs temporary support until roots establish enough to anchor the tree on their own.
Trees in genuinely windy sites. If you are planting on an exposed lot, along a canal, on acreage with no windbreak, or anywhere that gets regular strong gusts before the tree has had a chance to root in, staking for the first season can prevent the tree from rocking enough to tear developing roots.
Top-heavy trees relative to their root ball. Some nursery stock, especially larger caliper trees moved with a small root ball relative to their canopy size, genuinely cannot stand upright unsupported at first.
Trees planted in loose, recently disturbed, or sandy soil that does not hold a root ball as firmly as settled native soil.
If none of these apply, which is the case for most residential plantings of container-grown trees in reasonably sheltered yards, skip the stakes.
The Number One Mistake: Leaving the Straps On
If there is one thing to take away from this article, it is this: if you do stake a tree, take the stakes and straps off within one growing season, typically 6 to 12 months, and check on it regularly before then.
We remove more stake damage than we install stakes, and it is not close. How to Stake Correctly, If You Need To
If your situation calls for staking, do it the right way from the start.
Use two stakes, placed on opposite sides of the tree, not one. A single stake driven right next to the trunk restricts movement in one direction and can rub against the bark, causing wounds.
Attach straps low on the trunk, not high. The goal is to prevent the root ball from rocking, not to hold the whole tree rigidly upright. Straps placed too high remove the trunk’s ability to flex and build strength.
Use wide, flexible strapping material, never wire or rope, even with a hose section around it. Wire cuts into bark regardless of padding over time as the trunk grows and the tension stays the same.
Leave slack for movement. The tree should be able to sway several inches in the wind. If it is rigid and cannot move at all, the stakes are too tight and are actively preventing the trunk-strengthening process the tree needs.
Mark your calendar to check and remove the stakes. Set a reminder for 6 months after planting to check strap tightness, and plan to remove the staking system entirely by the end of the first growing season in most cases, or by 12 months at the outside for trees in genuinely wind-exposed sites.

A Garden City Scenario: The Cost of Forgetting
A homeowner in Garden City planted three ornamental pear trees along a front walkway and staked all three with wire run through sections of garden hose, a method that is still commonly recommended online despite being one of the worst options for bark protection. Four years later, one tree had visibly swollen bark bulging around the wire on both sides, and the trunk above the wire was noticeably thinner and weaker than below it. Removing old, embedded strapping from a mature trunk is delicate work, and forcing it off incorrectly can strip bark and cause more damage than leaving it, so if you are not confident doing it cleanly, have someone experienced take a look.
